September 7, 2017. ENEKO Tokyo, the newest expansion of the ENEKO concept by chef Eneko Atxa (3 Michelin stars in Arzurmendi Bilbao, Spain), is set to open its doors on September 7, 2017. It joins ENEKO One Aldwych in London and ENEKO in Bilbao as the third ENEKO location opened this year.
ENEKO is a culinary concept that was originally created by chef Atxa for his space at One Aldwych in London. It takes a slightly more informal approach to fine dining than Eneko´s three Michelin starred Azurmendi restaurant, yet the distinctive flavours and technique integral to the chef´s cuisine are as present as ever.
A return to the origins, dining at ENEKO is meant to evoke an experience reminiscent of home cooking, but taken to unprecedented levels of quality. It seeks to become the ambassador of Basque cuisine in Japan.
The Food
ENEKO Tokyo will adapt Eneko Atxa’s cuisine into a bistro style using Japanese products that will reflect the four-seasons Japan has. This proposal begins with a picnic basket containing small snacks and gives way to the rest of the menu. These snacks are offered in the outdoor patio and after tasting them, the guest continues into the dining room. It´s an experience reminiscent of the one lived at Azurmendi.
The new restaurant will have four set menu options available:
- 2 tasting menu options for lunch consisting of a choice of a picnic of 4 or 5 plates
- 2 tasting menu options for dinner consisting of a choice of either a 5 or 8 plate picnic
The Space
Located in the quiet Roppongi neighborhood, the building by the well known Japanese architect Shigeru Uchida, has been completely renovated. The new design was trusted to Naia Eguino, the same architect responsible for the Azurmendi building.
The white façade with an open entrance filled with vegetation, communicated through a large glass window with a modern and cozy bar, welcomes customers.
With an interior reminiscent of Azurmendi, the atrium, with an interior fresh air vegetable garden, is the essence of the space that brings everything together. Natural light illuminates the dining room.
The dining room situated on the upper floor has a capacity for 40 diners. Decorated in wood, the works of Aitor Ortiz, the world recognized Bilbao photographer, can be seen on display. In the background, the open kitchen allows the diner to view the live preparation of every dish.
The restaurant also has three private salons available (with 8, 10, 10 chairs) complete with a terrace, for those who wish to have a more intimate experience
A space where weddings can be celebrated
ENEKO TOKYO will also be available for weddings. Offering its beautiful outdoor spaces to use for both, ceremony and reception, the restaurant can be transformed into a wonderful place to celebrate a marriage. A wedding at ENEKO Tokyo includes: the welcoming picnic, the ceremony, a cocktail reception, and the after-party. A special menu and wine pairing are also included as part of the event.

About the Chef
A native to the Basque country (northern Spain), Eneko Atxa became the youngest chef to obtain three Michelin stars with his Azurmendi restaurant in 2012. Is the most sustainable restaurant in the world according to the World’s 50 Best Restaurants and was chosen as one of Europe´s Young Leaders.
Eneko is an intellectual by nature, with a kind and humble yet determined soul. Respect is central to his philosophy and he both exudes and commands it through his calm demeanor. He cares deeply about his team, his diners, and the health of both them and the environment. He has worked hard and continues to work hard to create the most sustainable environments he can at his restaurants. He insists on working with locals, managing waste, and implementing the most advanced technology available to work towards this goal.
His cooking is a trilogy of flavor, textures and aesthetics. It is a homestlye influenced cuisine, and his roots intervene in the composition of every dish. The plates he creates come from the DNA of Eneko, his origen and the authenticity of traditional flavors. It is a kitchen that speaks volumes but doesn´t shout, enveloped by the silence and harmony of sustainability.
THE ENEKOSYSTEM
Back in the day, Eneko was the youngest Chef in Spain to obtain 3 Michelin stars, a recognition that only 8 Spanish chefs have. It is an achievement that was reinforced when Azurmendi was placed on the list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants and deemed the most sustainable restaurant in the world by the same ranking. Azurmendi is also the Best Restaurant in Europe according to OAD (Opinionated About Dinning). Eneko is the Spanish National Gastronomy 2015 award holder and forms part of the European’s Young Leaders group.
